Castello Tesino

Overview

Castello Tesino is a picturesque town located in the heart of Trentino, precisely on the Tesino plateau. This mountain village, immersed in an uncontaminated natural landscape, offers a perfect combination of history, culture and natural beauty. It is located about 960 meters above sea level, surrounded by a mountain environment characterized by woods, meadows and streams.

The proximity to the border between the provinces of Trento and Belluno gives the town a strategic position, easily reachable from various locations in Trentino and Veneto. The town boasts a history that has its roots in the Middle Ages, with the first place of worship dedicated to San Giorgio dating back to 1103. Over the centuries, Castello Tesino has kept its local traditions alive, as evidenced by the historic architecture and cultural events that animate the village throughout the year. The village of Castello Tesino represents an ideal destination for those seeking an escape from the daily routine, immersed in a natural environment rich in history and traditions. Its attractions, from the Grotta di Castello Tesino to the historic churches, offer unique experiences for all visitors. Whether it’s an excursion, a cultural visit or simply a walk in the greenery at high altitude, Castello Tesino will conquer the heart of anyone who decides to discover it.

The Tesino plateau is an ideal territory for mountain bike lovers. The Tesino Lagorai Bike is in fact a project dedicated to mountain bike enthusiasts, which offers a network of over 170 km of routes immersed in the uncontaminated nature of the Tesino plateau. These itineraries wind through woods, pastures and alpine lakes, reaching altitudes ranging from 600 meters up to 2100 meters of Monte Agaro, near the Brocon Pass.

Pieve Tesino, near Castello Tesino, is the birthplace of Alcide De Gasperi, founding father of Europe. Today, in the heart of the town, the Casa De Gasperi Museum preserves his memory, offering an engaging journey into the history and values of one of the greatest statesmen of the twentieth century.

Food

The Tesino Plateau, located in the heart of eastern Valsugana, is a land of mountains, woods and ancient traditions that are also reflected in its genuine cuisine and its typical products, the result of an uncontaminated territory and knowledge handed down from generation to generation.

Among the most appreciated excellences, the “Verde del Tesino” stands out, a pre-cooked artisanal product, obtained following an ancient recipe from the 1400s of the Tesino Valley. A type of sauerkraut, slightly sweeter, excellent both to accompany polenta, but also cold for a refreshing and thirst-quenching summer version.

Alongside the Verde del Tesino, the plateau boasts other excellent products such as mountain cheeses, obtained in the summer months when the cattle graze freely among the high-altitude meadows, and smoked ricotta, ideal to enjoy grated on pasta or on its own. Even the mountain butter, creamy and with an intense flavor, is much appreciated by gourmets.

The area is also known for the production of high mountain honey, especially lime and multi-flower honey, particularly aromatic thanks to the richness of the alpine flora, and small berries such as raspberries, currants and blueberries, grown naturally or picked spontaneously in the Tesino woods.

There is also no shortage of medicinal herbs, used both in cooking and in the preparation of herbal teas, syrups and products for natural well-being. Added to this are typical cured meats such as Trentino speck and luganega, prepared according to ancient family recipes. The restaurants and mountain huts of the Tesino Plateau offer the opportunity to rediscover traditional dishes such as polenta with melted cheese, potato gnocchi, canederli, and desserts such as apple strudel prepared with locally grown fruit.

Visiting the Tesino Plateau therefore means not only immersing yourself in nature and Alpine culture, but also enjoying a cuisine that tells the story and identity of a community proud of its roots.

Points of Interest

One of the main reasons to visit Castello Tesino is Grifone del Tesino, a new work of Land Art created by the artist Marco Martalar, with roots and wood from the Vaia storm that hit the plateau in October 2018. After more than 2 months of work, 35 quintals and 2000 pieces, the Grifone, 6 meters high and 9 meters long, dominates like a guardian over the magnificent and panoramic Celado area, from where you can admire the entire Tesino plateau and the peak of Cima d’Asta.

Located on the border between the two regions of Trentino and Veneto, the mythological figure of the Griffin wants to symbolize the union between the two regions, which it represents in the Venetian lion and the Trentino eagle. Inaugurated in September 2023, it has already intrigued thousands of visitors and is an integral part of the next cultural/naturalistic project “Cammino di Vaia”.

The Castello Tesino Caves are a popular destination for visitors to Tesino, the only karst complex in Trentino equipped for tourist visits. It is a fascinating underground world shaped over the centuries by water, where stalactites, stalagmites and fossil remains of the cave bear tell an ancient story. The visit, lasting about three and a half hours in total, includes an approach on foot of about 40 minutes and a guided internal tour of an hour and a half. Access is permitted only by reservation and to visitors taller than 110 cm, to ensure safety and quality of the experience.

Castello Tesino is also a true paradise for lovers of hiking and outdoor activities. The numerous paths that cross the plateau and the surrounding valleys are ideal for excursions on foot, by bike or e-bike, among the most famous “Il Trodo dei fiori” One of the most fascinating tourist itineraries in the Alpine North East with more than 300 species of flowers and an unforgettable view of the Dolomites and Lagorai. The routes wind through breathtaking views, lush forests and ancient mule tracks, suitable for all levels of preparation.

The Church of Saints Ippolito and Cassiano, built in 1436 by Donato Pelloso, is a rare example of medieval architecture in Romanesque style with Gothic elements. Rectangular in plan, it has a small bell tower with an octagonal spire and interesting slits in the apse. A curiosity is the small room next to the apse, once used by a night guard to prevent fires. Inside there are precious fifteenth-century frescoes by the Baschenis brothers from Bergamo, with Byzantine and Romanesque influences, discovered in the 1930s and restored in the 1970s. Among the subjects depicted, sacred scenes such as the Last Supper, the Trinity, the Miracle of the Hanged Man and numerous saints stand out. The wooden coffered ceiling dates back to the eighteenth century.

The Astronomical Observatory is located at an altitude of 1260 m on the south-western edge of Celado, a plateau located north of that of Asiago. Inside, the structure has a large classroom used for workshops and for the introduction to guided tours, in addition to a library well-stocked with books on astronomy. The 7-meter diameter dome located on the top floor of the Observatory contains the telescope. Once opened, it can rotate on itself to allow the instrument to be pointed at the celestial body you wish to observe. The main telescope is a Newtonian reflector, equipped with a main mirror with a diameter of 800 mm and a focal length of 3200 mm (N800).

Pianezze (Valdobbiadene)

Overview

Valdobbiadene, located among the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano Valdobbiadene in the province of Treviso, is a charming Venetian town with roots dating back to the Paleolithic Era.
Its name derives from the Latin “Duplavilis,” referring to its ancient position between two branches of the Piave River. Famous for producing Valdobbiadene DOCG wine, the town is also rich in historical and cultural significance.

Notable figures such as Saint Venanzio Fortunato, bishop and Latin poet, and Pope Benedetto XI, whose family was originated from the San Vito district, are linked to its history. Surrounded by hilly and mountainous landscapes (Monte Cesen), vineyards, and a significant artistic and religious heritage, the town offers a interesting journey through tradition, gastronomy, and architectural beauty. Valdobbiadene is the perfect place for panoramic hikes and relaxation.

Food and Wine

Valdobbiadene is renowned for its Valdobbiadene DOCG wine, produced on the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This sparkling wine, known for its fruity and floral aromas, is the symbol of the region, accompanied by a traditional cuisine rooted in local Treviso Province products such as radicchio from Treviso, alpage cheeses from Monte Cesen, and cured meats made by local farms.

Valdobbiadene is an ideal destination for food and wine lovers, where tradition and innovation come together to offer an unforgettable culinary experience. The combination of breathtaking landscapes, renowned wines, and a cuisine rich in local flavors makes Valdobbiadene a perfect place for a journey into taste and tradition.

Points of Interest

The heart of Valdobbiane is its square, dedicated to Guglielmo Marconi. Completely renovated in early 2022, it is dominated by the 14th-century cathedral and the imposing bell tower dating back to 1743. Both were damaged during World War I and later rebuilt.

Not far from here is Palazzo Celestino Piva, a former school inaugurated in 1900, now housing the library and auditorium. Continuing along Piva Street, you reach Villa dei Cedri, an elegant Art Nouveau building surrounded by a public park. Today, Villa dei Cedri is the headquarters of the Association for the Heritage of the Prosecco Hills of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene.
This building and the next former factory (“Ex-Opificio”) host exhibitions keeping the historical and cultural memory of the area alive.

The Church of San Floriano, located on the homonymous hill and accessible from Valdobbiadene main square, offers a panoramic view of the UNESCO Hills. Rebuilt after World War I, it houses a 17th-century altar and a chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima. In the forecourt, there is the “Panchina Letteraria” ( “Literary Bench”) a symbol of the connection between the Piave River and Monte Cesen (the mountain of Valdobbiadene).

In the Pianezze place on Monte Cesen, the International Donor Temple was inaugurated in 1962 on a former military position, transforming the site into a symbol of peace and solidarity. Dedicated to blood donors, the Temple represents a place for gathering and reflection.).

… widely considered the signature climb of the Prosecco Hills, which were designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site on July 7, 2019.
Since 2016, the Muro di Ca’ del Poggio has been twinned with the legendary Muur van Geraardsbergen, the iconic climb of the Tour of Flanders. In 2018, it also became officially twinned with Mûr-de-Bretagne, another storied ascent that will feature again at the Tour de France—just two days from now.
The Giro d’Italia has passed over Ca’ del Poggio seven times: in 2009, 2013, 2014, 2017, 2020, 2022, 2024, and again in 2025. The Giro U23 featured the climb on June 16, 2018, in a unique real-time time trial on the slopes of San Pietro di Feletto. The Italian National Championships also tackled it in 2010, as did the Veneto Classic.
As for the Giro d’Italia Women, today marks its third appearance on the climb, following previous editions in 2012 and 2015.
